Dream Act Youth March Against Gop Anti-Immigration Platform And Voter Suppression At RNC

WHO: DREAMers in Florida – DREAM Action Coalition
WHEN: August 28, 2012 5:00 PM
WHERE: Ybor Centennial Park, 1800 East 8th Avenue, Tampa, FL 33605

Undocumented youth joined by the Latino & African American community from across the state of Florida will organize a hundred+ march at the Republican National Convention to remind candidates, like Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan, and elected officials that their anti-immigrant rhetoric and voter suppression laws will not dissuade Latino and African-Americans from flexing their political muscle in 2012.

The Republican party has officially adopted an inflexible anti-immigrant and anti-Latino platform that calls for encouraging SB1070 racially discriminatory laws, national E-Verify, and eliminating in-state tuition for undocumented students. Similarly, Kris Kobach, Romney’s immigration advisor, has filed suit against President Obama’s directive to stop the deportation of undocumented youth. Congressional Republicans in general have not been kinder, filibustering the DREAM Act in 2010.

In the wake of Republican rhetoric and overwhelming Latino support of President Obama, Republicans are doing everything they can to discourage the Latino, Black, and youth vote in swing states. They’ve done this with techniques, ranging from harsh ID laws in Pennsylvania disproportionately affecting Latinos, to a large to a mostly-Latino voter purge in Florida. Nearly 60 percent of the voters on the Florida state list of suspected ineligible voters are Latino. Together, DREAMers will march with allies and listen as voters purged from the Florida voter rolls and undocumented immigrants share their stories.
