Twenty-five Colorado State University-Pueblo English undergraduate and graduate students will recount the transformations and lessons learned from a two- week journey (July 9-22) to France and Spain at a symposium beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 2 in the Library and Academic Resources Center Lobby and Auditorium, 108.
The students were part of a six-week summer course, “Literary Landmarks: Writing Génération Perdue, Art and the Aftermath of War,” led by Dr. Donna Souder, assistant professor of English.
According to Souder, the students acted as modern “witnesses” to historical events, people, and places as they travelled across Europe, but also read and analyzed texts that did something similar. For example, students read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón as they traversed the streets of Barcelona — the setting for this award-winning novel about literature, language, and the Spanish Civil War. While in Paris, students read Hemingway’s career-making novel, The Sun Also Rises, as they simultaneously contemplated a modern, creative interpretation of Hemingway’s time writing overseas, The Paris Wife.
Students engaged in lectures from noted experts about surrealism, Salvador Dalí, and post-war art history. They spent a day exploring the medieval city of Toledo while reading excerpts from Cervantes’s Don Quixote, a classic novel set in the region.
“In all things, their goal, as scholars – as students of life – was to begin to see the importance of time and place to the beauty of language, literacy, and culture,” Souder said
Students read many of the texts in advance of the trip, but will complete their assignment with the presentations at the Thursday symposium, which is open to family, friends, and the CSU-Pueblo community. This event will showcase the students’ photo essays, interactive student presentations, and their final academic reflections.
