Construction of the repairs on the underside of the Fontanero Railroad Bridges began on July 11 and requires a full closure of Fontanero Street from Interstate 25 to Recreation Way. Drivers should expect some delays to complete this work and use Uintah Street and Fillmore as detour routes. The road will be reopened late Friday, July 13.
The City is in the initial stages of a project to address existing structural conditions on the bridges. This effort will begin the repair process so that the functional life of the structures can be extended. The project improvements will include construction of temporary shoring, which includes eight new columns and four pier caps to strengthen the mainline and siding bridges.
For the safety and expediency of construction and the safety of the traveling public, the City of Colorado Springs ask motorists to pay close attention to posted speed limits and signs through the project area. All construction activities are weather and resource dependent.
The project is funded by the City Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.
