Energy-assistance Program for Black Hills

Black Hills Energy announced today that the Colorado Public Utilities Commission approved its energy assistance program created to provide bill-payment assistance for qualifying electric customers. The Black Hills Energy Assistance Program officially took effect on July 1, and applications are now being accepted.

To obtain a print version, customers can call the customer service center at 888-890-5554. Later in July, the application will also be available at www.blackhillsenergy.comunder the Programs and Services section. In Pueblo, Black Hills Energy electric customers can pick up an application from the Black Hills Energy Service Center at 105 S. Victoria Ave. from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Program enrollment and distribution of funds will begin in the fall of 2012.

“Our goal with the new energy-assistance programs is to provide bill-payment assistance to those electric customers most in need and at the same time, continue to educate customers about ways to manage their monthly bill,” said Christopher Burke, vice president of Colorado utility operations – Black Hills Energy. “As we’ve been emphasizing, it is important for our customers to contact us when they find themselves in need of help to pay their bill. This program represents an additional resource available to our customers for this critical assistance.”

Eligibility for the new Black Hills Energy Assistance Program is based on household income and federal poverty guidelines. In the first year, Black Hills Energy will accept applications from electric customers at or below the federal poverty level.

As part of enrollment in the program, customers also must enroll in Black Hills Energy’s budget billing program and participate in no-cost energy efficiency and weatherization programs. More information on Black Hills Energy’s energy efficiency programs can be found at www.bhesavemoney.com.

The energy-assistance program is funded by all customer classes per PUC rule. Most customers would pay an additional $0.25 cents monthly (approximate) to fund the program.

For customers facing unexpected hardships or emergencies, Black Hills Energy provides other bill assistance options such as budget billing, payment installment plans, and due-date extensions to accommodate pay day schedules, etc. Contacting one of the utility’s customer service representatives is the best way for customers to make sure that their unique situation is reviewed and afforded every allowable option. Customer service agents are available 24-hours a day at 888-890-5554.
