This Monday, July 9, the University of Colorado will hold a press conference for its pair of 2012 Olympians, Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp at 12:30 p.m. in the Dal Ward Athletic Center Varsity Room, the same site for CU’s weekly football press luncheons, located on the second floor of the building.
CU head track and field and cross country coach Mark Wetmore and associate head cross country coach Heather Burroughs will also be on hand for the media.
Coburn and Kipp qualified for the Olympic Summer Games in London in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on June 29. Coburn won the USA title while Kipp took third to earn the final spot of the U.S. roster. This is Coburn’s second time representing the U.S. in the steeplechase on an international stage, while it will be Kipp’s first time. They become the third and fourth current student-athletes to compete at the Summer Olympics, joining Ted Woods (1960) and Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (2008).
In total CU will be represented by five athletes at the games with Kara Goucher (marathon), Dathan Ritzenhein (10,000-meters) and Simpson (1,500-meters) competing. This is the second Olympics for Goucher and Simpson, while it’s the third trip for Ritzenhein.
