U.S. Forest Service Temporarily Closing North Fork Road (240) & North Fork Campground In Chaffee County
The North Fork Road (National Forest System Road 240 located in Chaffee County, CO) and North Fork campground on the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Salida Ranger District, will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, July 23, 2012. The area will be closed in order to protect the traveling/recreating public from extreme timber blowdown conditions that exist in the area, as well as to allow for a contractor (logger) to perform sanitation and salvage timber operations.
• The 240 road will be closed and gated just west of the Angel of Shavano Campground and Trailhead, and span the entire length of the road to its terminus near Billings Lake.
• The North Fork campground and immediate areas surrounding the facilities will also be closed to all types of activities including camping and fishing for the duration of the sanitation and salvage timber operations, and until the 240 road and surrounding areas have been made safe for the travelling/recreating public.
• Reopening of the North Fork road and campground is anticipated to occur prior to fall 2012 archery season.
The Salida Ranger District appreciates the public’s cooperation and patience while the closure of the North Fork road and campground is in effect. Temporary closure of the North Fork road and campground during sanitation and salvage timber operations is necessary to ensure public safety. The successful completion of the sanitation and salvage timber operations will make the area not only more safe, but also more enjoyable for Forest travelers/visitors.
