OJC Law Academy graduates go through commencement ceremony on June 2
LA JUNTA — Five students were graduated from the Otero Junior College Law Academy’s Spring Class of 2012 in a ceremony at the college’s Student Center on June 2, 2012.
Presiding over his 29th commencement, Law Academy director Miner Blackford introduced the graduates and extended words of greeting to their families and friends. Graduates and guests were also addressed by Jim Rizzuto, president of Otero Junior College.
Graduates from the Spring Law Academy included:
Stephen Harbison, La Junta; Jonathan Juarez-Garcia, Antonito; Sean Neilson, Lamar; Tyler Schmidt, La Junta and Geri Sena, Manzanola.
Keynote speaker for the occasion was Stephen Harbison, a student of this academy who was also graduating in the ceremony. Harbison detailed the journey the graduates had been through over the past 15 weeks and the heights they have all had risen to in their personal goals of achievement.
“Fifteen weeks ago five strangers met for the first time; we came from different walks of life, experiences and age groups. We were also very unique in that we had a Navy and marine veteran together in the same room for 15 weeks…and we survived,” he said.
Harbison talked about the changes they had each experienced that drew them closer together. He also stressed the lessons mankind has learned from history and encouraged his fellow graduates to remember the lessons of the past as they embark on their futures.
In his closing statement, Harbison quoted ancient Rome’s Cicero, The Defender of the Republic, ‘Our nature impels us to seek what is morally right. The reputation and the glory of being a good man are too precious to be sacrificed in favor or anything else.’
Recognized for excellence in driving was Tyler Schmidt, and Stephen Harbison, both from La Junta; for arrest control, the award went to Stephen Harbison, La Junta and for firearms use the award went to Tyler Schmidt.
Registration for the fall semester of the OJC Law Academy, beginning August 20, is already underway. Information may be had by contacting Miner Blackford at 719-384-6867.
