Robert L. Armendariz Scholarship Application Deadline: May 31, 2012

Bob ArmendarizEl Cinco de Mayo, Inc. is proud to announce the establishment of the Robert Lee “Bob” Armendariz Scholarship. The scholarship has been funded with donations by individual donors and a multi-year seed donation from El Pomar Foundation. Robert Lee “Bob” Armendariz, founder and editor, “Hispania News”, died of natural causes on May 2, 2012.

Bob Armendariz was a local advocate for Hispanic (Chicano) causes.

Bob’s family established the scholarship fund in his honor and has appointed El Cinco de Mayo, Inc. to administer the funds for the 2012-2013 academic school year. An October 2008 Colorado Springs Gazette article quoted Bob as saying, “Getting people to understand education is very important is the biggest challenge facing the Colorado
Hispanic community. In today’s world you can’t get a job without an education. Back in the day you could get jobs like a mechanic by learning on the job. Things change.” Donations are still being accepted. Those wishing to donate to the scholarship can send a check to: El Cinco de Mayo, Inc. – P.O. Box 17373 – Colorado Springs, CO 80935-7373.

Co-Chairs of El Cinco de Mayo Inc., Carmen Abeyta and Linda Schaefer agree it is a great honor to be named administrators of the scholarship. In order to qualify, a student must be considered “underserved/underrepresented”. This includes students with limited financial resources, inadequate access to financial support, guidance or assistance and/or would be the first in their family to attend/graduate from college.

Qualified applicants may go to www.elcincodemayo.org to fill out an application. DEADLINE for the 2012-2013 academic year is Thursday, May 31, 2012.
